Repost from @errolrainey - A Kogi tribe member with a handful of dried fish.
We were pretty high up on the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and I’ve got two of my best friends from my childhood with me (Kirk and Sandy) and a few new friends too. @sandy.mclennan who got me on the project brought some dried fish to give the Kogi as gifts. Our friends at @kogicoffee (who got us access and guided us) told us that the fish reminds them of the time they used to live by the ocean, before the Spanish invasions began. The Kogi are peaceful, so they didn’t stay to fight, they fled to the mountains instead, where they still reside, in what they call the heart of the earth. Anyway after handing the gifts to the tribe, we managed to trade a live chicken for the remaining dried fish. We’d been semi vegan for a week, so a bit of meat seemed a great idea. Sandy is a great cook, but this chicken had been around the block and was tough as nails due to it. None the less, we ate it, and apart from the extra chewing, it was lovely. Nothing goes to waste on top of a mountain, and everything seems to taste better. Had some amazing meals up there. The Kogi trip was up there with the best trips of my life. The Kogi have some very wise words regarding life, probably even wiser than the translations we were given, which were wise enough. Back in February wildfires destroyed indigenous homes and affected approx. 1,000 ha of the Sierra Nevada. The Kogi have since been rebuilding the affected structures like this Nujue (ceremonial house)
Who’s going to the #MICE2019?
We’ll be there with industry peers and tasting some awesome brews!
Good luck to all of these year’s competitors 🏆
HER NAME: Susan Moylan.
HER 2019 RESOLUTION: Ousting out Tony Abbott from the Warringah federal seat and take over his role of Special Envoy for Indigenous Affairs.
HER FOCUS: Community, climate change, equality, a more inclusive Australia Day.
We were incredibly lucky to have Susan’s support when we launched Kogi Coffee. She opened our event and welcomed Arregoces, the Kogi envoy from Colombia, on behalf of the traditional owners of Australia. These photos are from a moving 2016 ceremony at a sacred Gamaragal site in North Head.
We wish her all the best on her quest and invite you to learn more about this amazing woman, part of the group known as the Stolen Generation.
Today we’ll have on our Insta Bio the link to one of many articles on Susan’s fascinating story.
Go get them @susanmoylancoombs !
