About Avirama

Avirama is the largest indigenous reservation (resguardo) of the Nasa people, started by the legendary Chief Pilamu, who led a rebellion against the Spanish colonisers.

Despite suffering from a devastating mudslide in 1994 (which killed around 1100 people at Avirama and neighbouring towns) and the constant threat of violence from Colombia’s armed conflict, Aviramans are an optimistic people who take advantage of the calcareous volcanic soils and irrigation from the imposing River Paez to grow their excellent coffee.

This coffee selection includes farming families who are one or two years into the three-year process of achieving organic certification, supported by the Tierradentro Organic co-op, a group of indigenous farmers who organised independently to help each other to improve chemical-free farming practices and find new markets for their outstanding beans.
